During an early morning fishing trip with a dad and his son, we learn about a pond in Vietnam the dad used to fish at during his youth. A pond, not so different than the one he now shares with his son. We get a small glimpse into the family life of immigrants and through their sacrifices we see great love and hope.
This book won a long list of awards including the cherished Caldecott Honor Book. Bao Phi wrote another wonderful book, Footprints, about a Vietnamese American girl that is bullied at school. As she walks home she makes the footprints of strong and brave animals. Once home she discovers her own footprints have strength and together with her family, she can face anything.
ACTIVITY: Tell your children about a place from your childhood that was special to you. Share with them memories from this place. If your kids are able, have them draw a picture of a place that is important to them and then write a couple words that describe the place physically or emotionally.
